By Richard Cumberland

A Treatise of the legislation of Nature, originally
titled De Legibus Naturae, first seemed in 1672
as a theoretical reaction to more than a few matters that came
together throughout the overdue 1660s. It conveyed a conviction
that technology may well supply a good skill of
demonstrating either the contents and the obligatory
force of the legislation of nature. At a time while Hobbes’s
work looked as if it would recommend that the appliance of
science undermined instead of supported the assumption of
obligatory usual legislation, Cumberland’s De Legibus
Naturae
supplied a systematic clarification of the natural
necessity of altruism.
Through his argument for an ethical legal responsibility to
natural legislation, Cumberland made a serious intervention in
the early debate over the position of traditional jurisprudence
at a second while the ordinary legislations venture used to be widely
suspected of heterodoxy and incoherence.
